All of our winners:
All of the entries for our Digital Divide competition were fascinating but out of these we have three 'winners'.

1. ALT-C Workshop Winners - "It's not for Girls"

James Clay and the Slam Virgins were the choice of the workshop participants for their funny take on gender and the digital divide "It's not for Girls". As you can see in the picture, they received a sought-after hand-knitted 'digital' dishcloth as a prize.

2. Web site voting winner - "Perpetual Divide" by Pile of Bodies

Despite the confusion over naming, "Perpetual Divide" was the winner voted by visitors to this site.*An excellent slam, in the Commoncraft style, that questioned the duality at the heart of the idea of a 'digital divide'.
We are happy to award this slam the Voters' Choice badge that members of Pile of Bodies can proudly display on their web sites or blogs

* Actually they were joint top voted with "It's not for Girls" but we gave them the award by invoking the written Don't cry rule and the unwritten 'Share out the prizes' rule.

3. Organisers' Pick -Digital Divide = Digital Boxes by Living in a box.

The organisers found this slam to be very clever and succinct, with a sting in the tail. Frances, Josie, Helen and Cristina are pleased to award Digital Divide = Digital Boxes the Organisers' Pick, a badge that members of Living in a box will be pleased to display on their web sites and blogs.

What's this Wiki for?
This wiki is to support a distributed workshop based at ALT-C 2008 in Leeds, United Kingdom, developing our workshop Web 2.0 Slam, at last year's ALT-C 2007. It was a lot of fun for those there, and attracted a fair amount of attention. Why not read on and see how you can join in the fun? You don't have to attend the conference, we are looking for participants across the world.

What's the Digital Divide?
The digital divide appears, at first glance, as a problem to be solved by the application of technology. Economic and employment opportunities can be a powerful motivator for ensuring that underserved populations have access to digital technologies. However, there are other opportunities: social, such as healthcare, employment, housing, and safety; and cultural, such as access to a global platform for diverse cultural expressions (Kvasny, 2005). Who can say if technology will deliver and which opportunities are most important? In this workshop, we aim to give a global platform to different perspectives on the digital divide, but we know our limitations.We are keen to explore different perspectives on the 'digital divide' by individuals and groups performing their ideas about the Digital Divide further details our ideas here.

Timeline

What does all that mean?
If you, as an individual or small group, have got something to say about the Digital Divide between now and midnight Wednesday GMT 10 September 2008 check converter, then you can create a slam, publish it here, comment on slam pages.
Then you can vote for your favourite between 11 and 14 September (deadline midnight GMT). We will announce the winners here and by message to members on Monday 15 September. That means that people from around the world can join in, not just those coming to our workshop. You can run your own workshop, or create your own slam, maybe with your friends. More details on how you can participate, just stick to our few simple rules.

Digitally Divided

This video has been produced by Pontydysgu and friends. We discussed the idea over skype and then each recorded our own part of the soundtrack. The text is from Wikipedia entries about the Digital Divide. We wanted to bring music and pictures together to explore the multi faceted and often contradictory phenomenon of the digital divide. And we wanted to bring voices and pictures together from different countries and cultures. We had originally intended to include Greek language in the mash but found that there is no Digital Divide entry in the Greek version of Wikipedia. We will write one.

Anyway hope you enjoy it.

For me the digital divide is not simply about haves and have-nots. We find our 'selves' increasingly visible in a multiplicity of digital forms ... from the profiles we fill-in on social networking sites to our avatars that roam parallel virtual worlds. Maintaining coherence across these digital identities and balancing this with what we might consider our real selves is not straightforward, and perhaps even impossible - a schism or what I would also call a digital divide.

There are of course many digital divides, including the age divide (which may be artificial). Marc Prensky talks about the divide between the behaviour of digital immigrants and digital natives (and perhaps a little disparagingly, about those who never use technology - his term for these is 'the analogues'). I notice the divide between what I can do with technology and what my kids do with it and it can be quite marked. I can see we have different minds sets, and distinctly different relationships with digital technology. This is probably due to exposure to new media as much as it is to do with age, or a generational divide. So I decided to write a poem about it, specially for this wiki. Here's my slam (it's not true of course, but it is presented in the form of a Limerick). I hope you enjoy it.

Hooked

I’m a digital immigrant, me
And the digital natives will be
Forever a stigma
Wrapped up in enigma
And shrouded in deep mystery

When he got his Nintendo DS
My son was so quickly impressed
He linked with his buddies
And soon the young hoodies
Were wirelessly hooked (more or less)

Over time, his Nintendo obsession
Dragged us down to the depths of depression
Each attempt to suggest
A change or a rest
Was met with a wave of aggression

A Dad-imposed mandatory ban
Merely caused him to ‘go underground’
Soon we had to agree
The Nintendo would need to be
Surgically removed from his hand

I decided to check the Nintendo
And I slowly worked up to crescendo
Then it hooked me as well
And I soon looked like hell
I won’t even try to pretend-o

The brain training software was great
And I found myself staying up late
But I’ve now had my fill
And feel over the hill
With a brain age of 78

Creating a Digital Divide Slam

Think about what your message is - and how you can get it across. Look at some sample slams - we are sure you can do better- and check out What makes a good slam.
Decide what tools and resources you will use. You can always use Google and other search engines to find tools and resources we have not yet spotted.
Create your slam and record it on digital media in some place that you can link to from your slam page.
You will need to join the Wiki to publish your Slam, just look for the "Join this Wiki button", top right.
Add a page (left menu) using the SLAM Template. In the Easy Edit toolbar, you'll find specific widget support for Google Videos, youtube and Photobucket, as well as a general purpose copy that will probably work. If you can't embed your material, then please provide a link. Photos can be uploaded to the Photo Gallery here, see tab above.
Publish your slam by midnight GMT on Wednesday 11 September, and message Frances Bell, Helen Keegan, Cristina da Costa or Josie Fraser when it's ready, so that we can make it available for voting from 11 -14 September. You will get a message reminding you to vote, as long as you have registered as a member.

Digital Divide - where does the biggest division lie?

I live in Manchester, UK, although I am originally from Portugal.
I created this slam because although I'm from a country where educational budgets are very "slim", or inexistent, it never stopped me from using the web to learn and communicate, and help others do the same. In that sense, I have come to realize that although access to some technology is needed in order to become part of the Digital Age, the most important aspect to overcome the digital division is the willing to WANT TO be part of today's future. That's a major driving force!
I connect, therefore I learn. I want, therefore I can. :-)
Although, I am aware things are not that simple or linear, this is indeed one of the golden keys to overcome the division: vision, openness and willing.
As the poet said (and here comes Fernando Pessoa): "God wants, humankind dreams, the deed is born"

Useful tools for creating your Slam

Digital cameras and mobile phones
Many cameras/phones allow you to record short video and/or audio clips, which you can then upload to YouTube, Google videos, Blip.tv and/or link to this site... If you use Google Video, you will be able to embed your video in your slam page, otherwise you can link to it.

Voicethreads
A voicethread is "a tool for creating conversations around media". Here is an interesting example .

Animoto
.... is a tool for annotating videos and more, see the 60 second video on the front page of animoto..

Photo sets or albums
You could use the Photo Gallery/Album feature on this wiki, or the Set/Slide show option on flickr.com, see an example of this in Sample Slams

Slideshows
You can use powerpoint (or keynote) and share your presentation on Slideshare. You can even add audio to it by creating a slidecast (see how here) Example here.

A quick search on YouTube throws up various videos ranging from news items to photo montages. It's worth taking a look to get a few ideas - unfortunately nothing like 'The machine is us/ing us', but perhaps this gives us the opportunity to make our own! ;-)
