PatParslow Bah, technology humbug! 0 Sep 11 2008, 9:04 AM EDT by PatParslow

We wanted to get across the idea that there are many forms of divide - gender, ethnicity, geography, wealth, skill, etc, but obviously with a certain *ahem* degree of limitation on time, this obviously was never going to be possible, so we settled for a view of the "What is in it for me?" divide. Many people cannot see any value in the technology which abounds today - and in some cases, to be fair, it may not have any real benefits for them. In education, however, I feel the individual can not afford to have a selfish view of whether the technology is useful for them - to be inclusive, we have to offer technological options for those who would be disadvantaged if we insisted on only face to face, perhaps enabled with a hint of email.
One of the things we saw as an issue is that quite often the technology enabled try to pull others across the chasm to join them on the high-tech side. This can leave the poor 'dragee' trapped in the chasm, and we see the way forward as being to provide many small steps to build bridges across the divides.
Mobile phones, social networking, online video - all make small steps possible, and provide useful services in and of themselves. All of these are still scary on their own, though, and having someone to guide you across the divide is what this slam is really all about. Community is part of the technology is part of the community.
Obviously, we have a need for better audio equipment here... ;-)
